Second, we have tensile strength. It is the ability of a material to resist tension or pressure forcing the metal to stretch out or pulled. High tension steel is ideal for a product that is required to hold two opposing structures such as sheet piles. They are also normally heat-treated rods. These rods do not resist shear and are very weak on bending. High tensile steel is ideal on wires, rods, and fasteners.

Thirdly, sometimes the designer looks for steel that is suitable for temporary deformation. In this instance, ductility is the main factor to consider. Ductility is the ability of a material to sustain plastic deformation under tension. It is the ability of steel to be hammered and stretched into wire without breaking. Ductile metal does not break easily. They can adapt to external forces on the structure such as an earthquake and vehicular loads. One reason why steel pipe is better than concrete pipe is that steel pipe is ductile. When the pipeline is subject to lateral forces the steel pipe deforms without fracture.
