WHAT IS HELICAL PILE?
In bored piling, the helical pipe is an assembly of steel pipe and a helical plate that is used to dig boreholes. A helical plate is attached to its bottom that allows the pipe to penetrate the ground. Then the pipe is attached to a rotary drill that pushes it to the ground.
The process of boring the ground while simultaneously rotating helical steel to remove the excavated soil is called auger boring. Auger boring works using Archimedes Screw Principle. In Archimedes’ screw, screw is used to lift liquid from the river to a place of higher elevation. There are many types of auger boring and one modern type is the helical pipe or drilling pipe. Others are using a bucket and toothed auger, for instance.

The pipe can be welded or seamless depending on the hardness of the soil and the diameter of the hole. If the hole needs to have a big diameter, a rolled pipe casing is advantageous. It is because the rolled casing is cheaper for large diameter.
The helical plate on the bottom is needed to reduce the resistance of the soil. The plate can be made up of AISI 1045 or higher depending on the profile of the soil.
