WHAT IS BORED PILE STEEL CASING?
The steel casing is a steel pipe used to retain the surrounding soil of a borehole during the erection of the bored pile. Bored pile, also called drilled shaft, is a type of reinforced-concrete foundation. It supports structures with heavy vertical loads. A bored pile is a cast-in-place concrete pile. It means that the pile is cast on the construction site. This differs from other concrete pile foundations like spun pile and reinforced concrete square pile foundations. These on the other hand use precast concrete piles.
Bored piling is commonly used for bridgework, tall buildings, and massive industrial complexes, all of which require deep foundations. The bored pile is used to distribute the vertical load of the building or structure to the layer of soil that has greater stability and strength. That is the reason why bored are commonly used in an area with soft soil.
When used for foundations, bored piles are specified for buildings and other structures that impose heavy loads. They are also particularly well suited to unstable or difficult soil conditions. In addition to foundation systems, bored piles are used to create structural underground walls for earth retention. Piles can be placed close together as tangent pile or even overlapping to create a secant pile wall. This wall is often used to control groundwater.

First, the steel casing is introduced to the ground of up to 1 Meter deep. Then a circular hole is a drill into the ground using an auger boring machine up to 2 meters deep. The steel casing then presses deeper into the ground to meet the depth of the excavation. The drill will then progress to the desired depth in consideration of the stability of the soil. The steel casing will follow to secure that the surrounding soil is retained. This process continues until it reaches the required depth of the foundation.
When the depth of the foundation reaches the drilling equipment will be withdrawn from the site. Spiral reinforced rebar will be introduced to the borehole. Then the hole is to be filled with cement. If the steel bored pile casing is designed as temporary, it will be extracted from the cement bored pile before the foundation fully solidified.

Steel casing allows minimizing the excavation area of the site to just to the size of the foundation. Ultimately not affecting the surrounding soil. Backfill is also minimized because the area excavated is minimal. In an area with soft soil, steel casing can be design as permanent. Here, the steel casing set as reinforcement for the foundation.
